Newborn session guide

Thank you for choosing Seeds Photography for your newborn photography session.  Photographing newborns is my passion and I aim to make the session as relaxed as possible.

What to expect

All newborn sessions take place in my calm and relaxing home studio located in Heathmont at 10.30am – this is to best take advantage of the natural light that filters into my studio during this time of day (plus you avoid that awful peak hour traffic!).

Your session is usually scheduled within the first three weeks of life when they remain sleepy and are easily curled into those beautiful, newborn poses (however can be done up to and including 6 weeks of age).

I always take my time with newborns, I will never rush a session and take as much time as we need, allowing your baby to be my guide.  Newborn sessions can therefore typically take up to three hours to complete (sometimes longer) – I want you to feel completely relaxed and enjoy every moment of your session without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

In the cooler months I will have my studio very warm.  I will also have on a portable heater so that bub will not be cold when it comes time to undress (warm babies are sleepy babies!).

Some helpful hints

If possible please try and feed your baby just before you leave your home.  This way baby will be nice and sleepy by the time you arrive and we can get straight into taking photos.  Make sure your baby is wearing an outfit that is easily removed so as not to disturb too much when it comes time for undressing, so please avoid singlet tops too!

  •  If young siblings are attending the session I usually aim to get the family/sibling shots done first - then usually dad and young sibling can then head off (or go for a drive/stroll) allowing us to concentrate on getting those nice sleepy newborn shots.

  • During the session I may ask you to feed your baby if necessary to encourage baby back to sleep before continuing.  Your usual feeding routine may go out the window during the session - this is not unusual!  If you have dummy/pacifier please bring that too, even if they don’t use one yet.

  • I prefer to photograph the baby in all their pureness, adding a simple knitted nappy cover, a delicate wrap or a little beanie/hat (all of these items are readily available to use at your photo session). However, if you have a special teddy, a hand knitted blanket or any other special items that you’d like your baby to be photographed with please bring them with you.

  • Bring plenty of spare nappies as we can tend to go through quite a few.  If you are bottle feeding also allow for plenty of milk.

  • Please feel free to bring your own lunch (drinks and nibbles are provided) or you can even take a short stroll (3-5 min walk) up to the local cafés and shops.

  • You are encouraged to make yourself at home, so please use this time to close your eyes and drift off to sleep on my comfy chaise lounge whilst listening to my sleepy, relaxing music if you wish.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to discuss them with me.  I look forward to catching up with you and your new little one very soon!

NB:  I would appreciate it if others refrain from using their cameras during the session, thank you!
